Making soap with melt and pour base requires four simple steps and no handling of active lye:

1. 1. Cut & Melt: Cut your soap base block into small, even 1-inch cubes. Place them in a heat-safe glass container and melt gently in the microwave in 30-second intervals (stirring between bursts) or over a double boiler until smooth (ideal temperature: 135°F–145°F).
2. 2. Add Scents & Colors: Once melted, gently stir in your skin-safe fragrance or essential oils (about 1–2 teaspoons per pound) and cosmetic colorants. Stir smoothly to avoid whipping air bubbles into the liquid.
3. 3. Pour into Molds: Pour the warm soap into silicone soap molds. Immediately mist the surface with 70% or 99% isopropyl alcohol to pop any surface air bubbles.
4. 4. Cool & Unmold: Let the soap cool completely at room temperature for 2 to 4 hours until fully hardened. Pop the finished bars out of the molds and wrap them immediately in plastic film or shrink wrap to lock in moisture and prevent sweating.

Melt and pour soap base is pre-saponified, fully reacted soap. The chemical reaction between natural oils and lye has already occurred during production. You never handle active lye, measure chemicals, or wear safety respirators. Simply melt the base, mix in your additives, pour into molds, and let it cool.

All of our soap bases are made from vegetable glycerin and are 100% plant-derived and vegan, with the sole exception of our Goat’s Milk base (which contains real milk). We never test any of our products on animals, so every formula remains completely cruelty-free.

Our bases typically test at a skin-compatible pH between 8.0 and 9.5, providing an effective cleanse without stripping natural moisture barriers.

A safe guideline is 0.2 to 0.5 ounces of scent per pound of base (roughly 1% to 3% of your total batch weight). Adding too much scent oil can cause the bar to remain soft, seep oil, or irritate the skin.

Immediately after pouring the melted base into your mold, give the surface a quick spritz with 70% or 99% isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. The alcohol breaks the surface tension and pops all surface bubbles instantly.

Yes, you can enrich your bars with extra carrier oils or butters. However, limit additives to 1 teaspoon per pound of base. Adding excess oil reduces the soap's lather and can prevent the bar from hardening properly.

Melt and pour base has a high glycerin content, which naturally attracts humidity from the air. In damp environments, that moisture pools on the surface as harmless "glycerin dew." To stop sweating:

• Avoid boiling or overheating your base during melting.
• Let your soap harden completely before unmolding.
• Wrap the bars immediately in airtight shrink wrap or plastic film once removed from the mold.
• Store wrapped bars in a cool, climate-controlled room.

Fragrance or essential oils containing vanillin naturally oxidize when exposed to air, shifting clear or light soaps to an amber or brown color over time. To preserve your colors, select vanilla-free fragrance oils or mix in a commercial vanilla color stabilizer.

Layer separation happens when the bottom layer cools too much before pouring the next one. To bond layers securely:

• Allow the bottom layer to form a firm skin that can hold weight, but is still warm.
• Generously spritz the surface with 70% or 99% isopropyl alcohol right before pouring.
• Pour the second layer at a temperature no higher than 125°F – 130°F (51°C – 54°C) so it doesn't melt through the bottom layer.

Standard soap base is too fluid when hot, causing heavy botanicals to sink to the bottom or light herbs to float to the top. Allow your base to cool to around 120°F – 125°F (49°C – 51°C) until it thickens slightly before folding in dried additives, or use a suspension soap base.
